“Fragrant Herbs and Tussie-Mussies
by Joyce Cotter

A Tussie-Mussies is a nosegay of flowers and herbs, assembled to create a 'note' to the recipient.
Each person can make one at this month’s meeting.
Try to bring small flowers, herbs and bits of greenery. We will have plenty of extras, though.

February, when the days of winter seem endless and no amount of wistful recollecting can bring back any air of summer.
Shirley Jackson,  Raising Demons

IN THE GARDEN
Its time to start seeds indoors for planting outdoors on April 15. Water restrictions do not apply to food crops. Although good choices like Better Boy tomatoes and Bell peppers will be available as seedlings at nurseries, many plant varieties will be available only through seeds.

Nasturtium is a non-food plant to start indoors and to sow outdoors. It spreads a low blanket of attractive foliage topped with cheerful flowers. It thrives on neglect. Most varieties require very little water and no fertilizer and is avoided by most garden pests. The flowers, leaves and seeds are edible. The leaves and blooms add a peppery taste to soups and salads.

The Great Backyard Bird Count
Watch your birdfeeder for as little as 15 minutes or as often as you like this weekend for an important check on how our birds are doing.

For information on this bird count and on Project Feeder Watch, go to www.birdsource.org Project Feeder Watch is from November-April. Report the greatest number of each species seen over a two-day period. Again, do it as often or as little as you wish.

For some more really excellent gardening tips, please check out "Gail the Gardener" column on the Redbud website. Go to www.RedbudDistrict.com and click on Education, then Gail the Gardener. Also Renee Hopf has a very nice Birds and Bees page. Lots of good info on this site.
