FLOWER OF THE MONTH:
NARCISSUS
The Narcissus belong to the Amaryllis Family and include the daffodil, the jonquil, and the paper white. These are easy to grow plants not bothered by little animals. Once planted, it will be years before they need to be replanted. When the plants become too crowded and blooms are small, it is time to dig up the bulbs, separate them, enrich the soil and replant. Late fall is the best time to plant.
When planting, spade the soil deeply and work in compost or rotted manure and mix in bone meal. When the flowers begin to wither, pinch them off at the base of the bloom to preserve nutrients, and then allow the leaves to die completely before cutting them off at their bases. Though not necessarily the current classification, in the past, yellow-flowered plants were called daffodils, white blooms with red cups were called narcissus and plants with multi-flowered stems were called jonquils.
