How did it get so late so soon?
It's night before it's afternoon.
December is here before it's June.
My goodness how the time has flewn.

IN THE GARDEN

Gardening does not stop because of the drought. There is still work to do outside and inside.

Outside, slugs are still ever present. Some gardeners use diatomaceous earth sprinkled around the plantings and some use a tray of flat beer. Apparently, what is supposed to work better is in the kitchen pantry. It's sugar. Set out saucers of sugar water (5 percent regular sugar dissolved in 95 percent water) instead of saucers of beer. Sugar substitutes do not work.

Don't forget inside plants. Save banana peels, and let them dry until they are so crisp that they will crumble, and then work the crumbles into the potted plants. This provides potassium which aids in a plant's vigor and helps it fight diseases.

For some more really excellent gardening tips, please check out "Gail the Gardener" column on the Redbud website. Go to www.RedbudDistrict.com and click on Education, then Gail the Gardener. Also Renee Hopf has a very nice Birds and Bees page. Lots of good info on this site.

I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December
A magical thing
And sweet to remember.

'We are nearer to Spring
Than we were in September,'
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December.

May you have the gladness of Christmas which is hope;

MEMBERSHIP NEWS
February 26, 2008, Tuesday, 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
CARD PARTY, LUNCHEON AND FASHION SHOW
Kingswood United Methodist Church, Tilly Mill and North Peachtree Road

$20.00 includes Continental breakfast, Lunch, door prizes and fashion show.
We furnish bridge cards; bring your own games.

Please decide what covered dish you plan to bring to the holiday luncheon - so you can tell the telephone brigade. That way we can plan to have a good variety of delicious food.

Remember to bring toiletries and ladies underwear to the holiday luncheon to be distributed to women in shelters. Please do not bring hair conditioners that are used when washing hair - they are an unnecessary luxury that wastes water and they really make little difference. Also, there are gels that do not have to be rinsed out.

Mary Ann, our Card Party Chairman, is finalizing plans for the event and will need everyone's cooperation. So think about what you are willing to contribute in time and talent.

Rosanne and Margo participated in this year's School Judging project. To promote gardening, students were encouraged to design plant boxes and small landscaped areas which were judged and graded by garden club members.
