FLOWER OF THE MONTH:

VIOLET

Violets, as well as pansies, belong to the Viola family. Sweet violet varieties (V. odorata) are generally planted for winter bloom. Best grown in rich, moist soil and semishade. The long-flowering varieties do well in window boxes. Native violets (V. blanda, V. canadensis, and others) are hardy and are often planted in the wild garden. Some do well as groundcovers in semishade in a woodsy soil.
